Laptop Crashes or Reboots After Torsion Spring Release (ODrive S1, D5065 Motor, USB Isolator)

Hi everyone,

I’m running into an issue with my ODrive setup and would appreciate any insights.

Setup:

  • ODrive S1 in velocity control mode
  • Motor: D5065
  • Gear reduction: 1:216
  • Power supply: 24V, 15A
  • Connected to Windows laptop via USB-C to USB-A cable with a USB isolator in between

What’s happening:

  • The system compresses a torsion spring without much effort, drawing no more than 8A.
  • Once the spring is fully compressed, it’s suddenly released by the mechanism.
  • Issue: Shortly after the spring is released, my laptop sometimes crashes or reboots. This doesn’t happen every time but enough to be a concern.

I’m wondering if this might be caused by electrical noise, back-EMF, or some kind of grounding issue affecting the USB communication, even with the isolator in place.

Any advice or similar experiences would be very helpful. Thanks!

Wow, that’s super strange. Is the windows laptop connected in any way to the power supply? Is the laptop charging / plugged into the wall? What power supply model number?

Laptop was on battery power when I was testing it. Just a note- I am compressing pretty substantial torsion spring here. I can’t tell if the motor overshoots after the spring is released.
