Linear Motors and Encoders

Hi Everyone,

I came across ODrive a few days ago, and I’m trying to come up to speed on its capabilities and strengths. I have a kind of unique project and I’m wondering if ODrive will be a good platform.

I’ve scrounged some iron core linear motors from my job - Chinese company, but pretty good quality http://hansmotor.com/products/detail-56.html

Along with those, I’ve inherited some AMO linear encoders http://www.amo-gmbh.com/en/products/linear-measuring-systems/incremental-measuring-systems/

I think I could probably get these to work with the ODrive since a linear motor is basically an unrolled brushless motor, but I was wondering if anyone has tried it or has any starting points. For now, I’m wanting to just play around a bit and see if I can get them working. Eventually, I’d like to use them to build some sort of device (pick and place bot, VMC, etc.)

Thanks!

Assuming that the linear motors are indeed 3-phase and that the encoder are incremental, I agree that the ODrive won’t even know the difference, and I think it should work.
Do show us some pictures/video when you get it working ;D
