Not having this kind of encoder I can just suggest you to see this documentation. The two blacks wires are tricky but logically the bigger is the GND because it contains the shielding.

Yes I agree that the big black wire is probably the shield. Shield black wires go together so it doesn’t matter if it’s the other way around.
