Feeling more than a little silly being perplexed by something I expected to be straightforward.
Perhaps I should not be surprised by this 
Do the 4mm bullet connectors on the D5065 not fit directly into the S1 screw terminals?
After looking online at the datasheets and examples, can’t determine why a different connector would be required (or what connector it would need to be).

Nope they don’t, I just got some of these 4mm bullet extension cables from Amazon: Amazon.com: 6PCS 4.0mm Banana Gold Bullet Connector Extension Cable for RC Brushless Motor ESC Extension Cable Wire RC Car Boat Parts : Toys & Games, clip off the banana plug, and then strip off a bit of the rubber to expose the stranded wire and then connect that to the screw terminals. Works fine and looks clean as well.
That’s what I’d recommend, yup!
